Can I ever make up my mind?
Posted by Akash under Internet, Life on April 13th,2008. 1 Comment.
Nope.
I switched back to WordPress because the new version looks much better and there are a lot of glitches with my own CMS-type-thing. It took my many hours to transfer stuff, but it’s all good. The main difficulty was transferring posts. I managed to do that by importing the database from mySQL, find/replace everything to match a WordPress import file, and import to WordPress. Unfortunately, I could not import my comments. I’m sure there’s a way, but it really doesn’t matter.
Last weekend, it was my first time driving! On Saturday, my mom decided to take me to a park/parking lot to drive around. At first, she only said we are going to “start the car,” but I ended up driving around and stuff. It takes a little time to adjust, but after that, it’s easy. As my mom was driving me home, she asked if I wanted to go around the neighborhood. This is very shocking coming from my mom. Driving on the real road on the first day… I didn’t expect that. I turned down the offer because I wasn’t comfortable driving around with little kids playing on the streets. The next day, my dad took me driving, and it got really boring since he wouldn’t let me go somewhere new after parking a billion times and driving around in circles. I wanted to drive in the neighborhood this time, but he wouldn’t let me. I hope I can be on the streets pretty soon.
I’m probably going to get my license in December (I turn 16 in May, but due to the Illinois driving laws, you must hold a permit for nine months before obtaining a license). Even then, I won’t have a car, so it won’t be that great. Blah. Whatever.
Everyone’s Doing It!

Yep. Another one of those cool website posts. This entry’s purpose is to show everyone the groovy applications/websites I use. Actually, it’s mainly for me. Maybe someday I’ll come back to this and say how lame these were or something. They are in no particular order.
– Object Dock is a really nice toolbar that is very mac-esque. I’m really sick and tired of Windows. Nothing works properly on my computer anymore! I’m getting a mac as soon as I can. Anyways, this program is very nifty and easy to use. You can manually add little shortcuts, including a start menu. You can change the size, background of the toolbar, and other special effects. It also displays programs that open. It’s very easy to use and fun to play around with.
The one and only iTunes. I’ve tested out several music library programs, and none are comparable to iTunes. It has a very neat layout, great and simple organization system, and it lets you take control of your music. The iTunes store is abundant. I would buy from it more if the price was less, though. I really like playing with the Cover Flow. It’s so easy to find music (instead of digging through thousands of songs) with the search feature. Syncing your iPod is so simple, as well. iTunes just keeps everything so neat and tidy automatically!
Last.fm is another program that does things for you. I like that. All you have to do is a simple one-time set-up, and you’re good to go. Last.fm basically stalks what music you listen to, and feeds you new music that you may like. You can listen to 30-second samples or full songs, go through recommendations, and find out more about your favorite artist. It’s a great tool for anyone who likes listening to music and you can sync it up with iTunes, WMP, and probably other media programs, as well.
Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site similar to StumbleUpon. At first, I used to use SU with FireFox and Flock, but then I switched over to Safari, and SU doesn’t work with Safari. I heard a lot about del.icio.us, so I decided to try it out. It’s basically the same thing, except more simple. I actually like this better than SU because it’s not so complicated and you can discover cool sites at the same time.
I’ll probably add a few later. I like a ton of more programs, but I don’t feel like going into detail.
Quick update on life: I’ve been busy with school and Guys and Dolls, but this week is spring break so I haven’t been doing anything except hanging out with friends and sleeping and wasting time on the computer. As for my blog, I still have stuff to update. I want to add a section entitled, “OMG look at my desktop!” but I don’t know if I should put it on the sidebar or not.
I used Century Gothic?

Well first of all… Happy New Year! I’m so tired, even though this break I’ve been awake past midnight anyways.
I’m pretty sure that this is my first fluid layout, so I don’t know if I did it right. Most likely, I did, because it looks fine to me. I had the hardest time designing it, though. Not designing for months gave me a huge block and I couldn’t think of ANY ideas. It was really horrible and kind of scary. I needed a lot of inspiration, especially from Web Designer Wall and PSDTuts. Great help was given to me by COLOURlovers; I used the Reo palette in this design. At first, I ended up using a bunch of patterns and images, but I realized that using outside resources too much will take away the fact that I made this layout, not me and mostly other people’s resources. So, I ended up using simple things like default Photoshop shapes. Oh yes, I used Century Gothic. I used to completely DESPISE this font, but now I don’t even know why. It’s quite nice for decoration and other minor fonts, but I still think I won’t be able to pull it off for the main text (unlike Ariel, who definately can). Anyways, if you guys have any suggestions for this layout, or anything that is not working, please do tell me.
I still have to finish writing up pages (all the “about” pages and links out). I’m also thinking of doing commissions, but I still need to look up on pricing and payment procedures. I’ll get to that as soon as I can. I hope you all had a great New Year’s eve!
Webdesign Advice?

EDIT: I moved this blog to BLOG.FALLEN-EMINENCE.NET. Please change all your links by adding “blog.” to the beginning of the URL. Thanks! For now, this main domain redirects here, but that will change once I get a good portfolio set up.
My friend and I are starting a website that will open sometime this fall. I am basically going to do all the coding, so I have a few questions:
- Avatars -We want our avatars to be displayed neatly, yet taking up little space. We also need to display three things: Artist, Date, and Image Credit. First of all, do we need to have a link to the image credit, or just put everything on a general credit page? Second, should we put the information to the side of the avatar, having two avatars being displayed in each row, or have it to the bottom of the avatar, displaying four? Or, should we just display the avatars, and have the information pop up on click? My friend and I think displaying on the bottom is the best idea, but what do you all think?
- Wallpapers – We are offering wallpapers in three different sizes: 1024×768 [4:3], 1280×1024 [5:3], and 1280×800 [16:10]. Do those sizes and ratios seem good? It covers the common resolutions…
- Wordpress – Firstly, there’s an issue unrelated to coding the actual site. I think the .htaccess for WordPress is messing with the .htaccess of other directories. Does anyone else get this problem? If so, how could I fix it? I may actually just move this blog to a subdomain and keep the main domain as my portfolio and network base. Anyways, should I use wordpress for this new graphic design site, or use my own system? I think it may be a hassle to use PHP databases with wordpress, but wordpress is more secure. Right now, I’m leaning towards not using wordpress. I’m actually thinking of switching out of wordpress for this blog…
- Headers – My friend would like to use a font that she downloaded for headers, but most people won’t have the font. I am going to use scripts from this article to do that. The only problem is, the headers load slower than the text. Would you recommend doing this? We think that it’s not too much of a problem. But is it worth it?
Thanks for reading, and I would really appreciate your thoughts on these questions.
New Layout

Hey everyone! I hope you all are having a great summer! It’s so hot here… it’s in the 90s. It’s cooling off a bit, but I hate the heat. I prefer the 70s-40s. I have mostly everything ready for school. I still have to do my summer work, but I have supplies and registration done. For me school starts on the 27th of this month. That’s only like… three weeks. Noooooooo……![]()
Anyways, as you can see, a new layout is up for this site. It’s a little bigger and spacey. I think it’s one of my better ones. It’s simple, yet bold and bright. It uses a lovely stock image that I found on stock.xchng. Thanks a whole lot to the owner of the lovely images of burnt cards: clix. The patterns used in this layout are from the one and only Squidfingers. I really like the colors… I think this is one of the first time I used bold colors while making it look decent! I hope you like this layout =) Any suggestions/comments are welcome.
PS – The portfolio page is up and running. I still have to make it pretty and add different sorting pages (like sort by most popular, by category).
